Aleppo 2
Chasing a place dream
Of this place that bears place name
Crushed in exodus hunger
A place that is but the expression
Of the desire to place you there where voice
Carries away
Where Djamla's Khawla's
Seif ad-Dawla's attention
carries you off
Nomad or flight of all
Who want to lock you up
In gold silk and jewels
Inflated with eulogies
Of fictitious glory
Alep 2
Porte
Où l’écoute de Djamla de Khawla
De Seif ad-Dawla
te porte
Nomade ou fuite de tous
Ceux qui veulent te coffrer dans
L’or la soie et les parures
S’enfler des panégyriques
D’une gloire factice
Your Home 2
familiar with crossing the distance
with meeting you the fear that
overwhelms you is nothing new
smiles welcome you
the bookseller suggests a Baedeker
always ready to chat
improve your German
Chez soi 2
familiarité au passage le lointain
à ta rencontre la crainte qui
t’envahit n’est pas nouveauté
des sourires t’accueillent
la libraire te conseille un Baedeker
prête à la conversation chaque jour
améliorer ton allemand
Nocturnal Wanderings
Covered by night and bitterness
you gather absent friends
grieve their absence
there's nothing the city can do for you
Its Victory sparkles on the Tower
indifferent to traffic
you check your map under a streetlight
to find your way
How to cross the Tiergarten
without running into a shadow
once in Kantstrasse the sidewalk cafés
invite the passerby to drink
Errance nocturne
Couvert de nuit et d’amertume
tu convoques les amis absents
t’affliges de leur absence
la ville ne peut rien pour toi
Sa Victoire étincelle sur la Tour
indifférente à la circulation
sous un lampadaire tu consultes le plan
pour retrouver ton chemin
Comment traverser le Tiergarten
sans se cogner à une ombre
arrivé à Kantstrasse les terrasses
invitent le passant à boire
Isumuth 1.
Enthusiast nonetheless astonished
you can't find the words
looking out on the bustling street
Misery piling up you're afraid of losing
the words' way
to the sign that you're seeking
Destroyed, exaltation collapses
childhood and its language lost
extracts you from the vacuity of borrowed space
Spinning
The residence's apartment, presumed so propitious
for poetry is in fact too vast
Morning and evening consigned to the work table
you continue the dialogue with
absent friends
Isthme 1.
Enthousiaste néanmoins sidéré
dire échappe à ton emprise
tu observes l’ébranlement de la rue
Amoncellement de misère tu crains perdre
le chemin de la parole
Où le signe que tu cherches /
Saccages, l’exaltation retombe
Visit
Faced with the astonishing
not the difficulty
yet to come
unless it's already
the urgency of a word long carried
to explore a lost paradise at least
to recover our steps
not sure what we've
left behind unnoticed
sorry state
world out of balance
is it perdition
always faced with an imperturbable
glare
the naked eye that exerts a pressure
a new tension
in this thinner body
he sees himself projected elsewhere
an ultimate
Shiver
Visite
Devant ce qui sidère
pas la difficulté
encore à venir
si ce n’est déjà l’
urgence d’un mot porté
explorer un paradis perdu à
moins de revenir sur nos pas
incertains de ce que nous avons
laissé sans inventaire
état lamentable
monde en déséquilibre
est-ce perdition
devant toujours un éblouissement
imperceptible
l’œil nu qui exerce une pression
une tension
neuve dans ce corps amaigri
il entend se projeter ailleurs
un ultime
Frisson
The Metropolitan Heart
Satisfied with a sleep free
of torrid truces
the opening eye
traffic jam in the street
you hold your breath which barely breathes
your head amid so much noise
nonetheless hears a vague tapping
and suddenly
Your heart explodes
What does this voice mean
It calls you
you neither hold tomorrow's secrets nor know
how within the elements to find the signs
to which you hold the keys
It's the big city
Le cœur métropole
Satisfait d’un sommeil sans trêve
torride
Uhlandstrasse Balcony
Yet the birds twitter in your ear
the sun makes you blink
slipping in a joy
which reminds you of having morning coffee as a child on the sheepskin in
the courtyard where they're getting the animals ready to go down to the river
Yes it's joy
and how close
You drift into an instant in which now doubt slips in
what can the poem do
chase away the unwelcome
and simply savor
this morning in a sidewalk café on the Uhlandstrasse where the toast is already on the table next to Hölderlin's Hymns…
Balcon Uhlandstrasse
Cheap Praise
What good is it Abou Tayeb
batted about From castle
to palace
Praiseworthy prince ignoble king
Favors tossed
satisfied chuckle
at words received
Enchantment
But who listens to them
these words chiseled with precision
And the praise
first aimed at yourself
You made
but a single
exception
Beneath the storm in Berlin the elegies of Moutanabbi strike
Abu Firâs groaning in his Byzantine cell
Icon of decline
It all clicks the moment that Amplemann opens the way
Louange bon marché
A quoi bon Abou Tayeb
balloté De château
en palais
louer prince digne ou monarque
Ignoble
Bourse balancée
gloussement de satisfaction
aux mots entendus
Enchantement
Mais qui les écoute
ces mots ciselés avec précision
Et la louange
à toi d’abord destinée
Un seul
exception
a eu grâce à tes yeux
…
Reading
Like an errant god approaching
through the morning mist
you don't see it coming and
you don't understand what's going on around you
Following the way toward these words that you're preparing to welcome
words that lead to the threshold
their banality bothers you is that then the sublime
you're not quite convinced
The door is open but
you pull back disheartened
you ask for a better understanding
and yet an emotion demands your attention
Lecture
Site of the Poem
To situate the words is to gather into yourself
an affair of fate
frequenting the gods ties your tongue
What river will quench your thirst?
or simply wet your lips
failure of the projected words
at the edge of a Country whose oasis is not the dream of paradise
but childhood is never short of desire
Aïn Sefra is the Spree to look elsewhere
when the spring erupts from an ink stain
dog wandering up
through the morning mist
*
For a long time you don't see it coming
in retreat
you don't understand what's going on
around you the banality of words bothers you
it that the sublime?
you convince yourself
you ask for a better understanding
feeling that need
to make your way toward these words
*
Traveling along obscure paths
to discover the treasure hidden in the valley
there words are born like flowers
You watch over your soul
it goes blue at the thought of a friend's leaving
using energy and trickery
to capture the image of a welcoming face
*
Long ago on the dune of Taghit
people come to welcome you
you learned long ago to always hope
despite the arrival of an unfortunate sadness
although you don't know you know that it's there
*
Autrefois sur la dune de Taghit
ces gens venus vous accueillir
tu as appris depuis lors à toujours espérer
The White of Evening
Suddenly an arc appears
(on his first travels the poet from Weimar thought of the chanter from Chiraz)
The arc in the sky is white
White also is his hair
However a certainty
continues to love
Morning fog blinds
the eyes’ precision
no doubt a ray of sun will
surge up to light his way
Astonishment
The eyes betray the secret
The poet says that he rarely brings the Abraxas
His word is not amulet
it walks always in the light
it resonates through the Valley scented with lily and rose
as before so far and near
nostalgia for the celebrations and pains of love
kept in the memory
Buthayna Zulaykha Chirine the Brunette and Layla
evoking them fortifies the rhyme in love
imitating an oriental lyricism
from stage to stage the Divan reclaims its youthful savor
Yes, to love is a great virtue!
You see yourself as an analogue of the Prophet
Is it madness Inspiration
Praise the Living is
MOSTHAPPY DESIRE
Moth consumed by the flame
Argand lamp at the inn
staying for how long
he understands This: Die and become!
He finally masters as did his elder the dust
He runs inhaling the grasses' scent
He believes %hard as iron* he says in paradise
Drunk on drunkenness without wine today
tipsy yesterday ignoring the prohibition
only demanding that he drink a better wine than Alexander
saying nothing that doesn't praise a woman
without the pitiable indulgence of a despot
the insipid equality of the bourgeoisie
he gets ready for his second voyage
a bottle of wine vintage '11 in his suitcase
He has presentiments along the way
Just as he's entering Fulda
or later Heidelberg
he counts the number of poems he's written
thinks about
how to organize them
/in suras
The Spring of Chiser is a mirage
/in books
Nameh is the realm of the possible
Yes
He finds a new puberty
joy after the death of a good friend
