Etel Adnan was born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1925. A celebrated writer, essayist, and playwright, she authored more than twenty books in English and French, including Sitt Marie Rose, The Arab Apocalypse, Paris, When It's Naked, In the Heart of Another Country, and Journey to Mount Tamalpais. Her work, as a whole, is a faithful record of the times and places she lived in: Beirut, Paris, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Spanning diverse media and genres, Adnan’s writings led to numerous collaborations with artists and musicians, including the French part of CIVIL warS, a multi-language opera by Robert Wilson, performed in Lyon and Bobigny, France in 1985. Her paintings, drawings, and Super 8 films were shown widely, including at dOCUMENTA (13), and in solo exhibitions at The Guggenheim Museum, SFMOMA, Institut du Monde Arabe, The Serpentine Gallery, and others. She passed away in Paris in November 2021.
Etel Adnan est née à Beyrouth, au Liban, en 1925. Auteure, essayiste et dramaturge reconnue, elle a écrit plus de vingt livres en anglais et en français, dont Sitt Marie Rose, L’Apocalypse arabe, Paris mis à nu, Au cœur du cœur d’un autre pays et Voyage au mont Tamalpais. L’ensemble de son œuvre est un témoignage fidèle des époques et des lieux où elle a vécu : Beyrouth, Paris et la baie de San Francisco. Croisant médiums et genres, les écrits d’Adnan ont fait l’objet de nombreuses collaborations, parmi lesquelles la partie en français de CIVIL warS, opéra multilingue de Robert Wilson joué à Lyon et Bobigny en 1985. Ses tableaux, ses dessins et ses films Super 8 ont été montrés partout, notamment à dOCUMENTA (13) et dans des expositions personnelles, entre autres, au musée Guggenheim, au SFMOMA, à l’Institut du monde arabe et à la Serpentine Gallery. Elle est morte à Paris en novembre 2021.
إيتيل عدنان شاعرة وكاتبة مقالات ومسرحيات مشهورة وُلدت في بيروت عام ۱۹۲٥. لها أكثر من عشرين كتاب بالإنجليزي والفرنسي وضمنهم "ست ماري روز"، "الأبوكاليبس العربي"، "حين تتعرى باريس"، "في قلب قلب بلد آخر"، و"رحلة إلى جبل تالباييس". بشكل عام، تسجل كتابتها بدقة تجاربها في المدن المتعددة التي أقامت بها مثل بيروت، باريس ومنطقة خليج سان فرانسيسكو. بالإضافة إلى تنوع كتابتها، تعاونت عدنان مع فنانين وموسيقيين مثل روبرت ويلسون على الفقرة الفرنسية من الأوبرا المتعددة اللغات "CIVIL warS" التي عرضت في ليون وبوبيني في 1985. كذلك عرضت لوائحها ورسائمها وأفلامها الـ"Super 8" في معارض ومتاحف عديدة، مثل "Documenta 13" وفي عروض فردية في متحف غوغنهايم ومتحف الفن الحديث بسان فرانسيسكو ومعهد العالم العربي ومعرض ال"Serpentine". توفيت في باريس في نوفمبر 2021.
